About Thermoelectric Air Conditioners

time2011/11/23

A thermoelectric air conditioner reduces the temperature in an enclosed area to a level lower than the outside temperature. The enclosure may be a box, transit case or control cabinet. Electronic devices make thermoelectric air conditioners function, and the cabinet air conditioners are particularly effective in maintaining a cool temperature for electronic equipment, prolonging its life. The air conditioners are lightweight, small and especially useful in military and industrial situations.

  Basics
Thermoelectric air conditioners include modules that behave like heat pumps. Heat pumps transfer heat from a cool area into a warm area in order to make cool areas cooler and warm areas warmer. The cabinet air conditioners' electronic components work with the modules to decrease the temperature of an enclosure without pulling in air from outside the enclosure.

 Details
Regular cabinet air conditioners require a working fluid such as chlorofluorocarbon to carry heat from the area a person wishes to cool. The disadvantage of that process is that moving components are an essential part of the appliance, and those components often break down over time. In addition, they make the air conditioner unit bulky. Thermoelectric air conditioners, however, use electric current instead of a working fluid to carry away heat, and they do not have moving parts except for fans. The electric current goes through a junction situated between semiconductors and draws heat from the junction. The result is a cooling effect.
